At the University Senate Sir G. M. O'Rorke presented the report of the committee appointed to deal with certain questions arising out of the last matriculation examination. It contained reference to a very serious matter, an irregularity on Hie part of one of the matriculation canilidates, who had obtained from a, friend in Christcbiu'ch (whose name tke alleged offender refused to give) copies of certain questions out of the examination papers before the examination took place. The report of the committee, which recommended that the candidate's naone be struck toE: the list of passes and the roll of the university, was fixed for consideration toaflorrqsi&t

As passes in individual subjects cannot be legally recognised for matriculation purposes the committee is of opinion that &uch passes should not be recognised for purposes of the solicitors' genenu knowledge examination ; that a judge of the Supreme Court be respectfully invited to consider the advisability of repealing clause 19 (p. 140 of Calendar), as that clause is in conflict with the existing requirements of the university.

The committee appointed to consider the correspondence with the English agent reported as follows : — "The examiners in England at their meeting in February, 1899, decided to offer to this university a sum of £50, to constitute a scholarship, and they suggest that the scholarship should be awarded to a candidate who has tried for a senior scholarship and has been very near to the successful "candidate. The I committee understand that the examiners ' in England will probably have made an award or a suggestion for an award at their I meeting in February of this year, and they think that the matter should be dealt with at the meeting of the senate held when the written reports are received from England of the results of the last examinations. An examiner in mathematics is required in succession to Pr^essor Lamb. For the purpose of filling ; this' vacancy the committee suggests the following names in order of preference: — E. J.- Roath, Esq., D.Sc, F.Pv.S., Cambridge; Professor Bryan, D.Sc, F.R.S., University College, Bangor ; Professor Loney, M.A., Royal Holloway College; Professor Heath, M.A. , Mason Science College, Birmingham." The report was adopted. J

The committee to whom the matter was referred recommended that drawing be added to the list of subjects for matriculation, and that the subjects for matriculation should consist of practical, plane, and solid geometry and either freehand drawing or model drawing. — The report was adopted. March 8. At the University Senate the case of Albert Peck, of Wellington, a candidate for last 'matriculation examination, who is alleged to have obtained access 'to certain papers before the examination, was considered. The report of the committee was that Peck had been guilty of a gross offence ; that, in addition to the Latin paper, he obtained access to questions in English, geography, and algebra before the examination. The committee stated that Peck declined to give the name of his correspondent, and they recommended that his matriculation examination be disallowed and his name struck off the books of the university. Counsel was allowed to ap.pear for Peck, who is a lad of 18 or 19 years, and it was admitted that he had seen one of the papers. The senate was asked to allow Peck to sit again at the next examination. Eventually the senate decided to adopt the recommendation of the committee, that matriculation of the candidate be disallowed, his name struck off the books of the university, and that he be not allowed to present himself at any future university examination.

The senate decided to hold the next annual meeting in Auckland on the third Wednesday in February.

The estimated revenue for the current year, was fixed at £63105. p^enditure,.

I £5780. The accumulated capital of tha scholarship fund on January 1 last was £14,924. The committee's recommendal tion that 15 scholarships be offered in December, 1900, was adopted. The report of the committee that J. P. Dakin, of the University of London, be admitted to the "ad eundein " degree of B.A. of New Zealand Univei'sity was adopted.
