PICNICS AND SPORTS.

The Hillside Railway Workshops held their annual picnic at Waihola on Saturday last, fully 1100 people being present. The weather was perfect, and the grounds everything thp', could be desired. Lollies and toys were distributed to the little ones, the older people enjoying themselves in games of rounders, dancing, etc. Various sports took place during the day among the grown-up people, besidc3 interesting events for the children.

The employees (and their friends) of the Otago Steam Saw and Planing Mills (M'Callum and Co.) held their second annual picnic last Saturday at the Glen, Outram. Nine drags and three cabs were required to convey the picnickers, who numbered aboiit 180, to their destination. The weather was all that could be desired, and one and all thoioughly enjoyed themselves, reaching home at 8.30 p.m. Dancing and sports were carried on during the day. The employees of the Otago Iron Rolling Hills Company held their annual picnic at Outram Glen on Saturday. The weather was beautifully fine, and the picnickers, numbering nearly 200, made the journey in drags, nearly a dozen being engaged for the occasion. A start was made from Green Island at 9 a.m., and after a pleasant drive the party arrived at tho Glen about 11 tl.m. Hampers were soon transferred from the drags, and a rush made for suitable places for luncheon. It may be mentioned that the Glon offers every facility for picnic parties, water being good and plentiful, while the native bush affoids kindly shelter from the scorching sun. This, on a rflay like Saturday, was a consideration. There is idso an excellent view of the Taieri Plain to be had from the surrounding hilltops. After luncheon the entire party was photographed by Mr D. Whyte. A well-seleoted programme of bporfcs was then gone through, and caused much merri-

ment. About 5 p.m. a start was made for home, which was reached about 7 p.m., everyone apparently having thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
