WOODVILLE.
This wonderful country meeting — wonderful for its large crowd of horses, its pots of money, and its splendid heartiness — these are the things that people talk about— was held last week, and the report appearing in this issue shows that the gathering was as successful as eveiv x\lr Henrys, the handicapper, had the good luck to see an average of 13 acceptors pev lace on the first day, and Mr Piper showed his usual skill in starting. The Cup, unfortunately, proved to be a poor race. Nothing could make Tortulla gallop. She waited on her opponents for about six furlongs, and then ba-'le them adieu. Seeing that she had 9.4- on her back, whilst the other placed horses were in the six-stone division, tlve form on Tortulla's part must have been pretty^, fair, to say the leiist of it. In the Stewards' Hack Handicap, on the second day. a protest was entered by Lady Spec's owner on account of The Dude being ridden by Mamaku's trainer. ' It was held over for consideration. The machine paid out on The Dude. Quilted fell after finishing second in the Ruahine Hack Handicap, and Robinson had his collarbone broken. The amount put through the totalisator was £10,521 for the two days, against £E9SO for tlie corresponding meeting last year.-
