CLAIMS FOR COMPENSATION. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, March 1
The extension of dredging operations in Otago and Southland has caused the Government to be inundated with claims for compensation by landowners along the river banks. Tho sum total of the claims now in the hands of the authorities amounts to close upon a quarter of a million of mon^y. The farmers along the Molyneux River are, so far, the principal claimants, though a large percentage of the compensation demands comes from the farmers upon the Mataura and other Southland streams. Commissioners have been appointed to inquire into and report on these claims, but their commission has not yet boon issued. This will be done in a few days, and it is expected that the report will be leady for submission to Parliament when it assembles in June.
