A CHINAMAN CHARGED WITH MURDER.
REEFTON, February 28,
The police arrested at Carr's Creek a Chinaman named Lo Yee, charged with the murder of another Chinaman, Lo Soy, at Slab Hut Creek on or about the 23rd February.
When his statement was being takgn accused struck for the bush, but was recaptured and remanded till March 6.
With reference to Ihe murder of the Chinaman Lok Soy at Slab Hut Creek, near Reefton, on or about February 23, the Weslport Timed states that the body of the murdered man was observed by some children named Loughnan through the window on the 22nd, and from the peculiar position of the body they concluded he was dead. Mr Loughnan n&3 infoim"d, ard he made inquiry the following day. Upon examination by Dr Conlon and Sergeant Phair. it was found that the unfortunite man had sustained two wounds about four inches long, one behind the right ear and the other on the back of the neck, the latter having completely severed the spinal cord, so Ihdt death must have been instantaneous. Two axes were lying on the floor, and the blade of one of them being covered with blood, it is pro aimed that the murder was committed with it.
The muidered man, it is said, had lived the life of a hatter for some time past, and was generally regarded as a quiet, inoffensive man.
