THE SENTENCE. COMMUTED
CHRISTCHURCH, February 15.
A meeting of the Cabinet, at which the Premier and the flons. J. M'Kenzie and W. C. Walker were present, "was held in Christchurch this morning, when the verdict of the jury in the Petone murder case was reviewed. The jury had recommended Wolfe to ine-rcy, and the Chief Justice had concurred in the recommendation. Tho Cabinet decided to recommend his Excellency the Governor to extend the clemency of the Crown in the case. An Executive Council meeting Avas afterwards held, afc which his Excellency accepted the advice of his Ministers, and Wolfe's sentence was accordingly commuted to one of hard labour Tor the term of his natural life.
