WEST HARBOUR MEETING. TWO MEN AND TWO HORSES.

in the event of all the Roslyn men not being accepted the surplus be handed over to the Otago and Southland contingent and remount fund." The Mayor (Mr A. Matheson), all the members of the Borough Council, Messrs Arthur Ellis, Alfred Washer, T. K. Harty, J. B. Callan, and others were appointed a committee to give effect to the resolution. The committee appointed subcommittees to canvass the district, and it is hoped residents will render every assistance possible. Over £20 was subscribed in the room, and a very enthusiastic gathering closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.

West Harbour is going to do its duty, and do it well. Two of its young men—Messrs Low and Mmn—have volunteered to go to the front, and a meeting was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday to consider what steps should be taken to assist in the sending off of the Otago and Southland contingent. The Mayor (Mr H. E. Moller) presided, and said the reason why he had not called a patriotic meeting before was because he knew the residents of the district were contributing to the patriotic fund in Dunedin. A special occasion, however, had arisen, and a special effort on their part was necessary- It was unanimously decided that funds sufficient to purchase a horse aoiece for Messrs Minn and Low should be raised, and committees were appointed to make a house-to-house canvass. It was further resolved to hold a patriotic meeting at a date to be arranged, and to ask members .of Parliament to give suitable speeches, which would be interspersed with patriotic songs. Messrs Barclay, Cray, Ferguson, and Hawcridge were appointed a committee to see the matter through, and Mr T. Ross was elected secretary and treasurer of the whole movement. The proceedings were brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem, but not until those present (numbering some 14- gentlemen) had put their " shillings in the tambourine " to the extent of £20.
