MINING,
The rich returns got by the Alpine, which I have wired you, caused a bit of a rush for dredging claims in the Clyde-Cromwell gorge. Crookston and party's dredge, the Mountaineer, has prospected a claim below the Eiley's Beach claim, but so far unsuccessfully. A Cromwell syndicate has bought out three of the original shareholders in this dredge, who have had a long run of bad luck. The Maori is at present undergoing extensive repairs. When finished, she will move up the river. I hear on good authority that she hat averaged 14oz a week on the claim she is leaving. Coal is the great drawback to dredging on the Upper Clutha; it costs twice as much there as at Cromwell.
