GENERAL.

September 19. — Things have been very quiet in our little town since I last wrote, and news is scarce. The only amusements have been a couple of socials, one in aid of the cricket club and one in aid of the funds of the Anglican Church; both of which were well patronised. The social being free from the formality and stiffness of a ball, and presenting more variety of armi3c>«iGnt tVan a concert pure and simple, ie an entert'uoriient that hits the popular tat>td. Weather. — This is ono of tho latest springs on record, an<3 up to tho present time sharp

ono only a night or two back. As a result She show of fruit is not good. V. C. H. S.— Talking of fruit reminds me of the fact that the Clyde and Alexandra members of the horticultural society seem inclined to give the Cromwell end the go-by, and o keep the shows at their own end of the county. The reason advanced to justify this severance is the meagre support given to the Alexandra show by the Cromwell and Bannockburn people. I would like to recall to the memory of the Alexandra people the fact that their first show was very well supported by the Cromwell -neople, but that they failed to return the compliment ; and, furthermore, to remind the Clyde neople that the Cromwell and Bannockburn people have always attended their show in large numbers. The committee that fan the show last year must have been hard put to it to produce a good entry list, -when they included among the entries those that were made for exhibition only. This has never been done at Cromwell; I do not know if it has ever been done at Clyde. Tha inclusion of the" exhibition only " exhibits among the entries vitiates the whole table, and renders it valueless as a means of comparing the relative merits of the various shows. The Alexandra people ain't bad on ihe solo horn! Their little table is about as untrustworthy as the ordinary Parliamentary return.
