NOtes from Reefton.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, September 13. Big River. — The mine manager reports for the past week: — After driving 20ft on the Teef in the stopes we went through, and are now timbering and getting ready to rise on the stone. The contractors have been driving on a leader 6in wide, but not gold-bearing. They have driven 19ft for the week. They have started in No. 2 level, and have driven Bft with four men. On September 11 they struck stone in No. 2 level shewing gold. I cannot say much about it for a few days, until we break through. Cumberland Extended. — The mine manager reports:— Wo have done Bft more rising from the main level this week, making a total height of 45ffc on gold-bearing stone. The quartz is 2ft in thickness. We started driving on the hanging-wall side of the level, at a point about 70ft back from the rise, and cut 2ft of quartz carrying a little gold. There is water making its appearance here, and it is very promising. Dark. — The mine manager reports : — The reef on No. 2 level has now been driven 53ft in the north end. The reef is 9ft thick, and in the «Qu& end 7ft, and appears to. onpn aut. Pae

hundred and ninety-three tons have been sent to the battery from this level. The stone so far is of low grade. There is a good flow of water coming out of the reef. Dillon Extended. — The mine manager reports : — The laying in of a supply of timber and renewing portion of the low-level road has somewhat interfered with driving of late, consequently very little ground has been got over. Some sandstone has divided the quartz, and each wall now shows a reef formation, which may be expected to make into one shortly. Otherwise there is no change, and a block may be looked for any moment. REEFTON, September 17.
