Notes from Lyell.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) LiELL, September 17. Alpine. — The mine manager reports : — The No. 9 level has been extended by contract for a further distance of Bft, making the total extension 38ft. The reef continues from 6ft to 7ft m width, and the stone in the footwall is of fair quality. Very little stone from this portion of the mine has yet been treated at the battery, but stoping was started on this reef to-day. S toping has been already carried on at the back of No. 10 main south level, the reef still being from _sft to 15ft in width. The contractors for the winze at the north of No. 10 level have completed a further depth of 10ft. The conntiy is a mixture of broken quartz and slate, but the footwall has not yet been met, while colours of gold can be obtained from the stone by mortar test. The No. 11 level has been driven a further distance of 10ft, making the total distance driven by contract ISOft. The country is becoming more soft, indicating proximity to a block of stone. In the stopes at the back oi this level there is no change either m the size or the quality of the reef. During the week 230 tons of stone have been sent to the battery. The top plates at batteiy yielded 1720z amalgam from 400 tons.
