FOR THE DOG'S SAKE.
A favourite "turn" at variety shows is that of the performing dogs, and those who run first-class troupes of these clever creatures can command very high salaries. Included iv the smart feats of these canine artists, lon^ and high jumps are commonly given. The distance covered by various kinds ot hounds is something prodi£'o.ia, one leap
frequently taking them across the whole width of the stags, Tho work entailed on the showmen is not, however, over when the dog has been induced to clear aonie lofty obstacle. Falling from such a great height some provision is necessary to guard against accident to the valuable animal, whoso lega may easily be koken in tho fall,
The sketch herewith showg s very usual method of overcoming the difficulty. Fall'ng through the air, the dog lauds on the edge of a padded table, and, c.\rried forward by the impetus, is neatly caught in the arms of an attendant posted a little further along aud behind the scene.
Tho Wanganui County Council has accepted the tender of J, A. Leedon for the erection of ttie Wupgehu bridge, Maurice being £2631.
