NOTES BY TERROR.

'.* The Dunedin Fanciers' Association have succeeded in obtaining offers of two more medals for the dog section. Mr Collie, of the Central Hotel, gives a gold medal for the best collie dog or bitch in the show in any class ; and Mr A. Shaw, of the Albion Hotel, Maelaggan street, supplies a silver medal for the best smooth collie.

• . • A great deal of correspondence has been received by the Dunedin Fanciers' Association from owners of collies in different parts of New Zoalaad regarding the special class added by the club, viz , the farmers' and shepherds' class, for rough or smooth-ccated collies other than gable. The club have already received several entries of collies from as far north as Napier.

• . * Shylock, the celebrated greyhound, the property of Mr Russell, Auckland, who was standing at a stud fae in New Zealand of 7gs, left for Sydney last week, where the owner expects any number of bitches will be forthcoming at the fee named. Although Shylock is much esteemed here by all lovers of & good greyhound, still he was not sufficiently appreciated to warrant much support at hia fee. Before he went, however, that celebrated coursing bitch, L'zzie Woods, the property of Mr Myers, visited him, and the uniou should produce something above the ordinary.

•.•With regard to the objection!) being made in various quarters to the local appointment of a judge who was disqualified aa an exhibitor some years ago, 1 am informed by Mr Crawshaw, the secretary of the society, that the disqualification waa withdrawn, prior to the appointment, but that though notice of the withdrawal was given to the Kennel Club Bonie three month 3 back, that body has failed to make response of any kind. For the satisfaction of my readers 1 also saw Mr Mariacher, the appointee in question, and he informs me that he did not seek the appointment, nor had he consented to it, but now that it had been made he was quite willing to periorm his duties, provided that it waa made quite clear to him that everything was in legal form, and that exhibitor's would nob suffar. With regard to tha disqualification, he states that he understands it was for exhibiting a dog under the name of another, exhibitor, and that he would have taken stepa to assert his innocency of wilful neglect in tho matter at the time, but that he was then more concerned with the personal feeling exhibited than at the disqualification itself. Whatever may bo the righto or wrongs of the case, I dad that there aro many local fanciers pleased to see lit Mariaclier's name to

the front again, and eager that tho old florea should bo considered healed.

• . ■ I have had the pleasure of seeing a very promising litter of pap?, born on June 9, by Renfrew Wolf (3on of Rinuoch ex Opawa Fay) out of Lassie, ex Rimu Rita by Rimu Pilot. Pilot is by champion Young England ex Mostyn Dolly, the dam Rita being by the same sire ex Ormskirk Netta. As will be gesn, therefore, these pups are of the very best blood. Their parents are both sable aud white, aud carry correcb ears, feel, anJ tail?. The dog Wolf has an exceptionally heavy serviceable cost, as ho needs to have, for he ia n«;ver coddled even in tho coldest weather. Perhaps, too. Wolf would lead by a few points Id the matter of the fea'.uroa mentioned as against the dam, but fnr all that Lassie is a particulftily sinarr, RcLivo, aad servincablo bitch, rather large for her sex, aud just the kind to produce n good wo; kin^ strain. Altogctrcr I think the pupa arc ful! of p-.oraise, aDd likely t<> prove useful worker*. The owner is Mr M'Laren, Cl.irko slrett, North-East Valley.

• . • I was maili amuoed to road in b contemporary this anncuLC<ment : "Wo notice that the Nlw Zealand collie bitch Reno was passed over without even a commended card at tLe Bjdney show. We always thought, an j have said, that this was ft much over-rated bitch." A<* it happens, R>:ue was not sho^n though entered 1

• . • Obtaining their news evidently by way of Australia, botb my Canterbury kennel contemporaries writG :—": — " Another visitor of canine renown coining to Australia is Mr Macdona. Tbia gentleman, lately a member of the Houss of Commons, was the first' fancier to introduce to the Bulbil public tbe bt Bernard. He went to Switzerland, and from the monastery of Mount St. Bernard obtiined his fir-t stuck "

• . • It will be seen, however, that Mr C. S Turner, wriler of " Orls" io thp Poultry and Dog Gazetl?, corrects the foregoing in ab least one respect. Ho says : — "I menMobed a month ago that Mr J. Macdona was likely to C3me out to W.A., and I see that « Wattle Bark ' repeats it, either culled froru me or some ivhpre else. He gets wrenjr, as u s ual, when he states that t';i3 g?nt'eman fi-6t iD<pjited St. Bernards iuti England, although it was partially in the family. Ib was the late Mr G- ds Land re Macdcna who was first interested in them, though there were several other early importers, among them the late Mr J. H. Murchi*nn, F.R.G.S., who owned Champion Olive and many other crack for terriers, the la.t of note bti:;g Oii-acknfll. He also had Twitcher (afcerwacds p >honed ou the bench) when he beat Riohni-iud Jack for Mr Ark weight's cup at CLetteifn-M."

*.• Whilst ionching on St. Bernard*, it ixiay inttiusl cur local fanciers of that breed if I q-jote a Mc'bourne contemporary as fo'lowj: — Mr O Ridley b«» soid one o) his L.rd .Liiburn — B'lver Prince? 1 ; pi.ppuslo Mr Williamson, of CavtUmaine, w' lf > i« to be c •r.g/atulateJ on securing s'lt'.h a h'gh'y-brcd young dog. La-J Lilbuin ia the latest importation in t-t. Bernard sires, and one tho ( , sLculJ he of great value to breedcr-s to cross with their Oipsian and Lord Hawke bitches.

• . • Fi-cm Christchurch papers I lesrn thit a meeting of the commitreo of tbe Canterbury Kbcuel Club was held Iswfc week for the pu r fiose of dra't'iig rules fot 1 the society. TUrn wai a goc.d alterdauee of members, and. vde • alia, the ffllowiag new members were f-l-Hvd-- viz., MftSHB L. Bijfgensi A. G-.pcß, AU.-.u Hopkins E. S. Hardy J V ihns(on, M. Mn'thu?, H. ll.iyuold.«, and R. Youn & '. This b.ii:g- the p.es nt nifmberf-hip to 63, and the club has every reason to congratulate itself upon its pvogrpg?, and expects before long to t umber 100. An adjourrod general rr.Cff.irg v/as hold a"; Warnei-'s Hotel on Friday evei ing. The rnlea t as drawn up by the sub-committee, wete adopted and pissed. The advisability of holding a show this year was fully discussed, and after hearing tha views of a prominent official of the Collie Club, who expressed the anxkty of his club to co-operate iv holding a show with the new club, the meeting expreesed the opinion that a show should be arranged. The committee of the club met aS the conclusion of the general meeting, whni it was resolved to hold a show towards the latter end of September, provided the support of the Collie Club be obtained.

• . • With reference to the intention of the New Z-^land Collie Club holding ita show in Wellington this year, " Fancier " in the Southlwid News says:— This is very much to be regretted, as it was understood at the inception of the club that its annual fixture would be held in conjunction with oce of the various dog societies' shows, changing the venue each year. I understand this year the show is no"; being held in conjunction with any society's fixture, but as a separate concern. It is * pity that the Collie Club did not see its way to approach the Southland Society. lam sure local fanciers would ha*e only been too willing to provide the needful. A feature of the forthcoming local Bhow will hs the exhibition of the four best working dogs iv Olago and Southland. Mr Lillico, of Morton Mains, has kindly undertaken all the arrangements in this connection.
