WAIHEMO LICENSING DISTRICT.

An adjourned meeting of the committee of the above HcensiDg district was held in the Courthouse, Palmeiston, on Friday, At noon. The members present were — Messrs J. O. Gow, W. Guffie, P. Kenny, W. Nicholson, and J. Boss.

Mr Gow wss appointed chairman in the absence of Major Keddell, S M.

The police were represented by Sergeant O'Brien and Constables Hilli? rd (clerk), Brown, and Joyce.

The police reports on the whole of the licensed houses throughout the district were deemed satisfactory, no complaints of any description being made, a fact highly creditable to thA licensees and gratifying to the bench in having such e?idt-nce of the manner in which the houses were conducted.

NEW LICENSES.

Allan M'Kerrow applied for & license for the Clyde Hotel, Hampden.

Mr W. O. MacGregor and Mr D. M. Findlay appeared in support of the application. A petition oigned by 50 out of 80 householders in the Borough of Hampden in favour of the license beiog granted was handed in, as also a photograph of the house.

The Acting-chairman stated that the committee had decided to adjourn the application to the 22nd inst. to enable the magistrate (Major Keddell), the chairman appointed by tbe Government, to be present. Hp pointed out that at the last local option poll the votes recorded at Hampden were : For continuance 95, reduction 130, no license 153 ; and the committee felt some hesitation in dealing with the application under the circumstances surrounding it.

An application for a renewal of the license of the North- Western Hotel made by Mr Findlay on behalf of R. M. Collins, who is building a new hotel on the site of the one dettroyed by fire some months ago, was also adjourned to tie 22nd iost.
