THE BEST-MANAGED FARM. TO THE EDITOR.
Sin — In consequence of the absence of tbe successful competitors and the resulting private presentation of the prizes, competitors and those interested were not afforded an opportunity of commenting on the result. T personally wished to make a few remarks, and should be pleased if you will afford me space to lay them before the public. I intended to have said • —
"Mr President wnd Gentlemen, — As I remarked last year when for the third time running I received the second prize for the bestmanaged farm in Otago and Southland, I thought it wa3 getting to be somewhat monotonous. Now when I appear for the fourth time consecutively as second, and only a single point behind the first, it is tiresome and provoking 1 But we are not disgraced, neither are we disheartened; and it will readily be conceded that it is much easier to keep in good order a farm of a little over 400 acres than one a trifle under 1000 acres, like Monte Christo. But although for ihe last four years beaten for first place we have never fallen below second, and not being at all chicken hearted, we shall just 'Try, try, try again.' I am constrained to say that I think it is scarcely creditable to the rest of Otago and Southland that three out of the four prizes in this important division should be allowed to fall to three farms only 10, 14-, and 29 miles respectively from the southern metropolis — Invereargill. I thank the association for its fourth second-prize medal and the Milburn Lime and Cement Company for its fourth truck load of agricultural lime, which wo highly appreciate." — I am &c, John Reid. Dunedin and Monte Christo, June 3
