ALEXANDHA.
May 30.— 8y refusing the sei vices of a volunteer company at Alexandra tbe Government has missed an oppirtunity of securing the services of as line a body of young men ai any town in the colony can pioduce. They have bone, muscle, and grit, and being inured to a life of dangerous toil, they are j agt the class of men that could be relied on in sn emergency. Debating Society.— The other evening tbe members of the Alexandra Debating Society had the pleasure of listening to a masterly address from the president (Mr Williams) on " Britain and Her Sons." It was just the style of address to warm the blood, tingling to the finger tips with loyalty and patriotism. This society has dono excellent work during the past four winters, being the means of inducing some ox the young folk to go in for effective reading and study, which act as b bar to the frivolous waste of time that takes ■place in most up country towns. Ecclesiastical — The Rev. Mr Browne, the Clyde curate of the Church of England, has inaugurated services in the Town Hall, Alexandra, where his ministrations will be appreciated. Thanks to social and .religious influences, 'Alexandra, from being a hotbed of larrikinism, nas become one of the most orderly of country townships. Clyde Correspondent. — Your Clyde correspondent's spleen has become enlarged and his liver out of order, otherwise" he would not have scarified Alexandra's borough council in such un- . merciful teims. Now, I know Alexandra, and tinder existing conditions of water supply its sanitary state is no more nor less than could be expected. That the town is " the di: tiest town in the colony" and " a filthy little borough" is simply 'not true. I would advise your Clyde correspondent to undergo a course of aperient medicine, and he will see clearly that Alexandra is not such an unclean town as he depicts it to be.
