January 26. We are once more settled down to our normal state of activity after the dissipation of tbe Christinas holidays. I am glad to state that water for mining is unusually plentiful so far, but owing to the excessive heat it will no doubt fail fust fri'in now.

lam credibly infoimed that both the dredges are now on payable gold. The Ngap'ara is working away still, and appears to be none the woice for her ducking. The shareholdei s have learned a lesson tiiat should stand them in good stead in the time to come.

I am sorry to say that the Upper Nevis dredge has not yet succeeded in tapping the lead, but I trust to be able to tell another tale before Ion?.

The third annual picnic of the employees of Donaghy'a Rope and Twine Company -was held on (Saturday last at PorbobeUo show ground. The party to the number of nearly 100 drove down in four drags, a cab, and a carriage. The weather at the outset was boisterous aud cold, but at various turnings of the road where protection frona the wind was afforded the pleafeureseekers the sun proved comparatively warm aud pleasant. The outing waa a most enjoyable ono, and everyone, from the baby in arms to the old grandmothers, appeared to be much contented with the day's pleasure. Regret, however, was expressed that Mr J. L. Pasgmoro (who wss ab home suffering from a severe cold) and Mr .Lee Smith (whose business engagemeuta interfered) were not present, as those who were preseub on the two former occasions of the kind remembered how much they added to tho enjoyments and pleasures of the day.
