ST. JOHN'S SCHOOLROOM, MILTON.
A handsome new Sunday schoolroom was recently opened in connection with St. John's Church, Milton. The building is of brick, the main hall being 67ft by 26ft, and capable of holding comfortably over 300 people. At the back is a plctform with passages at each side leading to the ante-rooms, the latter measuring 12ft by 26ft. In front is a porch with a door at each side and folding doors opening into the hall. The whole building is very well lighted and ventilated by 18 windows and ventilators in the roof and the back wall. The inside of the hall is tinted a salmon colour with a dado of dark red, and the roof being stained and varnished, the interior presents a very attractive appearance. We learn from the Brace Herald that the want of a hall was greatly felt, and the Ladies' Guild, with the vestry and St. Jchn's Club, took iv hand the raising of funds. Progress was slow until Mr Finch with his well known liberality came forward with a handsome pecuniary donation. - Plans were then prepared by Mr H. F. Hardy, diocesan architect, and a contract let to Mr Norman Wood. While the building was in an early stage of progress, Mr Twiss, another member of the congregation, offered £100 towards making the hall larger, and adding a largo anteroom at the back. The vestry gladly accepted the offer and tbe plans were 'altered to provide for tbe addition. Afe the tea meeting held in connection with the opening the Rev. G. W. Christian presided, and there were vresent aleo the Yen. Archdeacon Robinson, the Rev. J. Hounsell, Easign Lane (Salvation Army), Mr James Allen, M.H.R., Mr H. F. Hardy, and others. Apologies for nonatteudance were received from the Rev. D. O. Hampton, the Rev. J. Chishdlm, and the Very Rev. Father O'Neill. Aitsr the tea a musical programme was carried out; the choir, assisted by others, rendering several selections. A number of speeches were delivered, most of the speakers referring to the liberality shown by Messrs Finch and Twiss.
The rainfall for April in the chief centres was : — Auckland nine days, total fall in inches 212 m; Wellington 14 days, 6'9liu ; Christchurch four days, 0 25in ; Dunediu nine days, 1 39 in. At a meetiDg of tho Dunedin Burns Club Committee, held on Wednesday eveniog, it was decided, in response to a request by the executors of the Rev. Dr Stuart, that a suitable case and' stand be provided for a valuable snuff mull of Robert Burns, so that such an interesting relic may ba. placed in the museum.
