June 7. — Tbe ordinary meeting cf the borough council was held oa Wednesday evening. Pre-
sent — Hit Worship the Mayor (Mr Shore) and a full attendance of councillors. Correspondence of an uninteresting nature was read from the Melbourne Glass Company.— W. Coulter requested
the cancellation of his lease of pound reserve. Referred to Finance Committee.— The agent of
the Bruce Herald wrote solicitksj* a shure of the council's advertising and printing work. Referred io the clerk. — M. Brown wrote diM.iv ing the council's attention to the almost impassable state of Snlcomhe street opposite her property. Referred to the inspector. — The following deputations wera icceived :— Mr W. . H. Mackenzie, representative member for the borough on the Clutha River Board, re river bank protection ; and the school committee re Diamond Jubilee celebrations. — Accounts amounting to £17 were pasted for payment.— The balance sheet for the year ending March was adopted, and the mayor was authorised to sign it. — The clerk was instructed to take legal proceedings against all defaulters of rates and rents. — The burgess roll was laid on the table, and the- mayor and Councillors Walsh and Christie were authorised to sign it. The Record Reign. — The school committee
and the borough council have decided to tako joint action in inaugurating a programme for the celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Fire. — On Saturday foronoon aa unoccupied house of three compArtmcuts, the property ot Mr R. Forrest, was totally destroyed by fire. Ihe Royal Insurance Company has a riak of £70 on tho building. The house hae been untenanted for fully six months, and the origin of the fire is a mystery. This is the second dwelling built, oo this allotment destroyed by fire.
