ALEXANDRA.
June 7.— A meeting of ladies interested in tha getting up of something to celebrate the Record Reign was held in the library on Thursday afternoon. There was a good attendance, and it was ultimately decided to have a treat for the children ill the afternoon and a dance on the evening of June 22, and on the 23rd a ball. The address to be sent Home to the Queen is on view in Mr Strong's window. It looks very nice. Improvements.— The council are to be complimented on having decided to put an iron gate at the entrance to the recreation ground. The council are nls.o calling for tenders for a permanent day man. The town is sadly in need of something of the kiud.
Debate. — The debating society hold their fortnightly meeting in the library on Thursday evening, when a very enjoyable couple of hours was spent. The president was a bit late through an accident —but better late than never. The editor read some interesting papers. Mr Clois read a paper on "The Growth of the British Empire." The fact of the word " English " being used several times where "British" should have been the word caused one of the members to draw the speaker's attention to the matter. A pleasant evening was spent. '
Mining.— The Molyneux hydraulic dredge did not have such a good wash-up last Saturday as on the previous week. The return was lOoz, while the week previous it was 220z lOdwt.
Football — There is some likelihood of the Alexandra team Amalgamating with the Upper Clutha Football Club and making a visit to bunedin. I hope this will not come off, as lam quit* certain the Alexandra boys can go on their owu merits. I should like to see the team go and do some good work. We are getting up si dance to see if we can't raise £5 to help to defray tit* travelling expenses.
