AN IMPORTANT DISCOVERY.
NATURAL GOLD AND SILVER. Perth, June 1. An important discovery has been made ia the Great Boulder mine at Kalgporlie. Native silver has been discovered which is found to contain fine crystals of natural amalgam, auch as is found in very few mines in the world. The discovery proves tho existence of mercury in the ore, occurring probably in the form of cinnabar. The discovery is of commercial as well as scientific value, and ia another link in tha chain of evidence that lodes go down a considerable depth. , Later details show that the discovery of native ailver was made at the Great Boulder Perseverance mine, Ealgoorlie. Specimens ara to be forwarded for examination by eminent mineralogists in London and Berlin. In the Lake View Consols mine a lode of remarkably rich natural gold and silver amalgam has been discovered. Picked samples assayed S9Ooz of gold and 9680z of silver to the ton.
Thirfcy-four packages of valuable Maori carvings were brought up to Auckland on Thursday by tho schooner Aotea, from Port Awanui and Kaukokore. The majority of the carvings are for the Auckland Museum, and include some fine specimens.
