THE CANADIAN TARIFF.

Ottawa, April 27. la the course of the debate in the House of Commons on the Tariff Bill, Premier Laurier said that British goods were now admitted at per cant, below Ihe regular tariff. This privilege did not apply to Belgium and Germany. The Hon. O-. E. Foster, Minister of Finance in the last (Bowell) Administration, said that this was equivalent to repudiatingBritish treaties. The Hon. Sir K. Oarfcwiight replied that if the existing law did not justify the action of Canada the Government could appeal to Great Britain to do Canada justice. April 28. In the House of Commons Sir C. Tupper, sen., declared that the discriminating clause of the new Tariff Bill was illegal. Canadian newspapers and the public warmly approve of the bill. London, April 28. In the House of Commons Mr Chamberlain stated that the Government cordially appreciated Canada's friendly spirit in giving preference to English products. Belgium has protested against the discriminatory character of the bill as being opposed to the commercial treaty between Belgium and Great Britain.
