WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of this County Council was held in the Council Chambers on Saturday last, at which there were present — The Chairman (Cr T. Muir), and Crs G. Clark, J. Harbsbonge jun., M. Isbister, D. Kennedy, R. Malheson, J. Ross, D. Ross, and J. Stewart.

The Inspector reporbed as under :—

Green Valley Ridiug. — Ih&fc when the vote had been expended on gravel for the Pigroofc road they would hear-no -more of that road beiug a bad one. Tbe contractors were all working up bo tinio, and by the middle of next month would be finished. The breaking of the metal would also bo nearly finished. — Report received

Macraes Riding. — The C*pburn bridge had bceu aUbuded to, but the main bridge ab Hyde required some attention and repairs — Cr Hartstonqe moved — " That the report be received, that the attention of the Maniotofco County Council be called to the condition of the bridge over the Taieri, and that they he requested to in&truct the eugineer to meet the Waihemo County inspector and examine the bridge, and to report ou the same with a view of applying to the Government for a grant for repairing the same. — The motion-was seconded and carried.

General. — The roads all over the county were being put in fair order for the win'er. The road to Shag Point required some maintenance gravel, as alro did the Main road to Dunback. — Cr J. Eoss movetl — "That the report be rtcsived, aud that tenders be called for gravelling the Shap; Point road." — The motion was seconded by Cr IsniSTEtt and carried.

Cr Isbistt.u moved — " That tenders be called for lOOOjds of gravel for the Palmerston-Dun-back Main road." — Carried.

Cr Kennedy moved and Cr Hahtstongh seconded — "That tenders be called for 300 yds of gravel to be spread on road in Dunback Riding." — Carried.

FINANCE.

Accounts for the month amounting to £386 14s 4d were passed for payment.

CORRESPONDENCE.

**• Mr John Caldwell, Palmerston, applied to have some improvements effected on the boundary road opposite his property, which was almost impassable —Cr ■ Hahtstonoe moved — "That the application be declined." , If the work ouly cost 5j he would oppose it. — > j Or D Ross seconded the motion. — Cr J. Ross I moved as an amendment — " That the sum of £2 10s be expended under the authority of .the council, provided the Palmeraton Borough ' Council spend an equal sum in improving the road." — Or Stewart seconded the amendment, which on being put to the vote was carripd. The Secretory to the Treasury, Wellington, wrote intimating that the sum of £3 12s, goldfiskls revenue, had been remitted to the credit of the council at the Bank of New Zealand. — Reoeived. The Receiver of Gold Revenue, Naseby, forwarded list of miners' rights i»Rued within the county during the year onded March 31, 1897, in terms of B"ction 65 of "The Counties Act, i 1886 "—Received. Or Mathkson moved and Cr Stewart seconded— " That this council approves of the proposal to tax bicycles, and will co-operate in obtaining legislation in that direction."— •Carried. !' The Secretary, Treasury, "Wellington, wrote drawing attention to section 317 of " The Counties Act, 1886," re forwarding statement of receipts and »xueuditure for the year ended March 31, 1897. — Received, the statement having been forwarded. Mr A. G\ Cockerill, Dunback, wrote drawing attention to a culvert on road line in front of sections 20, 22, block VIII, Moeraki Survey District, which was far small for the quantity of water in time of rain, aud which blocked the water back on to his land, it being swampy,' and rendered it dangerous and boggy for cattle Jin winter time. He asked to have the calverb 2t't instead of Bin or 9iu, as he intended to cut ft I drain to it. — The inspector was authorised t» j arrange to have the work done by Mr Ccchrane, the cost not to exceed 30s, on the motion of Cc Isbister, seconded by Cr Stewart. OTHER MATTERS. , An application from Mr S. Dick (adjourned from la*t meetiug) to gravel the boundary road leading to his premises having ben brought up for discussion and decision, Cr J. Ross moved— " That the turn of £\ b; expended by the council in gravelling the ro^d referred to, providing the Palmerston Borough Council agree to spend '. a similar amount." He pointed out that he was a large contributor of rate 3 from the same block, and he had never applied for the expenditure of Any money. The road was very slippery in wet weather and required gravelling. — Cr Isbisteb seconded the motion. — Cr Mathr^on moved, as an amendment, which Cr Haktstonge seconded — " Thac the application be declined." — The amendmennt was carried. Moved by Cr Mathesox and seconded by Cr Hartstoxge— " Thac tenders be called for itn« provemHnt3 to road leading to M'Lallan's run, - Macraes " — Carried. Moved by Cr Clark, seconded by Cr MathesON— " That tenders ba called for comi pleting the unmetalled portioaof the Moonlight road, Macraes riding." — Carried. Moved by Cr Stewart and seconded by Ct D. Ross — " That teuders be called for gravelling Goodwood road from the Main road to the church." — Carried. The chairman and Crs J. and D. Ross were appointed to interview the minager of the local branch of the B^nk of New Zealand re redaction of the rate of interest on the county's overdraft. The chairman was instructed to draw the Minister for Lands' attention to the opening of the road through Mr Allen's property at Puketapu.

The Chairman moved and Cr Kenneot Eeconded — " That Constable Hilliard be requested bo visit the Dunback Factory, with a view to preventing the pollution of the Shag River by refuse from the factory."

CONTRACT.

The tender of Mr J. Kitchen was accepted for contracb 329, gravelling the Stoueburn road, up to £60. The full amount of the tender wa| £72 10s, and that of Mr Lanham £75. The council then adjourned.
