Cheap Sugar.

TO THB EDITOH. Sir,—l think au increase on the import duty ion sugar would be highly objfictionnblo. The present sheapness of sugar is a great blescfog. I lately saw in the Witness a statement that: as the reßult of experiment it was found that the mixing of *ugar in the food of tome animals hud appreciably increased their strength. The London Spectator in a late number says: — " The ease with whioh sugar can bo obtained is said to be at least one causa of the great improvement in tho height and bulk of our city population, and especially among young women who work." That the eating of sugar n apt to injure or decay tbe teeth is prob&bly a populav error. A skilful dentist in tho Home country told me he did not think the eating of sugar much injured the teeth, aud that the welfare of the teeth depended c. good deal on tho health of tho stomach, disorders of the stomach being api to produce decay of the teeth. There is probably oonsidemble sympathy between the teeth and the stotntch. both being agents in the alimentary process—one in the mastication, tho other in the digestion of food. So I would B&y to people, "Bab sugar, and plenty of it."—R am, &0., Puesua, April 14-. Colonuu".
