GORE.

February 15 — Local sporting and athletic societies are all agog in anticipation of the Gore Cycling < lub's .sports, to be held on th* 24th inst. The local cyclists are training very earnestly for the various events, aud there are lumours of outside men with high reputations competing. The meeting promises to be interesting and successful in every wjv Amusemknts —We are upholding our reputation for amus ments. Advertisements re lectures, show-, concerts, and sports now adorn the pages of the local newspaper. Well, we must do something to keep ourselves alive, a* otherwise things are ;«s " dull as dish-water" with us. Agricultural. — Harvesting operations have been iiegun. hut they have not become general. Farmers complain that the crops this year are not up to expectauon". Railway Liuses —The Railway department is the owner of The land on which the best part of Gore's business premises are built. The tradesp ople lease the sections from the department. The leases are now falling due, and the question is, What is the department, going to do? There are certain uncomfortable rumours that it does not intend to grant rencvals. This would be most inconvenient to many residents here, and I believe that the borough council intends to take the matter up and see, at any rat--, if something definite cannot be obtained from the department, for if it does take the dreaded step shopowners would like to get as lengthy notice as possible. If such a step be taken there will be a great revival in the building trade here, and lucky landowners on the other side of th° street will become comparatively wealthy. But it is not likely that the department will kill the goose that lay* tlie golden egg in Gore. There is a very neat annual income obtained from the railway reserve on the right side of the main street. Farmers' Club.— The Gore Farmers' Club is alive. It is again "going for" the Railway department, this time in reference to the carriage of j chiff. Members think that the freight on chaff i to Dunedin ia absurd, and correspondence is pasaing on the subject. The club has decided to take time to consider the matter before it frames a deI finite resolution. Turnip Growing. — There is some talk about a j turnip-growing competition being held in the district, but nothing definite ha; been done.
