PASTORAL RUNS. Wellington, January 30.
, The area of pas'o al runs to be offered for lease by the Lands and Survey department , next month comprises 1,370,116 acres, and of small grazing runs there will be 45,522 aores, making a total of 1,4-15,638 acre. The pastoral runs are in Nelson, Marib rough, Canterbury, Otago, aud Southland. Two runs iv the j Mackenzie Country are of an • area of 48 887 i acrei, ene of them forming part of the Raldon station, while the other is Gray's Hill station. Five runs in the Mackenzie, Waitaki, and Vincent Counties aggregate an area of 201,300 acres. Loburn and Bloomfield runs, in Ashley j County, will be pat up for lea^e for three years. j There is also a large area iv Otago. The largest area, however, is in M%rlborough — viz , 1 587,598 acres including the Patriarch, Raglan, ! and Birch Hill runs.
Mr B. Fenerheerdt, a South Australian breeder, has achieved a striking success in crossing his merino ewes with Romney Marsh , rams in prder to produce a hardy, profitable ' sheep for wet and swampy courjtry. He has ! imported 18 pnrebred Romney Marsh ewes and i three Romney Marsh rams. ' Th& codlin moth is making sad havoc in the orchards in Taracaki. It is asserted on good , authority that the beautiful orchard at Mimi, j formerly owned by Mr Chapman, but now owned by Mr Oliver, which was renowned for i its abundant crops of apples, is absolutely ' mined through the ravages of the moth.
