OREPUKI MINING. (From a Correspondent.)
February I.— The great excitement now is : the new find of gold. Mr Wilson's stables are taxed to bupply the number of visitors and proßpectors, but he manages to supply the wants of all comers. fcSorue 11 years ago there were many thousand ounces taken out of a very bmull area on the beach, but now the real lead has been found that supplied the gold on the sea beach. Iv 10 days two fortunate men took 240z from their claim, and now the run of gold has been pegged off for over a mile, besides many areas on the beach. It is well known that men have worked the beach between the Waiau and Orepuki for the last 30 years with success, and some of them or their successors are still doing so, but ! thii find of the lead will cause a reaction here, aa it has puzzled the most experienced miners to account where the gold came from that was distributed so freely along the seashore. I am i also told on the best authority that one dredge is ! ordered, and another likely to be, to work the j lagoons acd river bed. Th*y are sure to meet with { splendid success from the prospects those em- ' ployed in boring are getting. One claim alone is [ now under offer for £4000.
