1 June* 27."— The last four days here have been exceptionally fine 'and mild for the time of year, and already the days seem to be lengthening out ; but thi* is probably owing to the cloudlaasness of ■ tho sky, -which possibly, causes the twilight to ' lengthen. ' RiyjEiiTON School Committee.— At a meeting 1 ' of this committee held on' Monday week, with Mr Jas. Fullarton in the chair, it was decided to fix the midwinter holidays for the week commencing Jane 15 to suit the pupil teachers' examination in Invorcargill The headmaster's report for the five weeks ending May 29 showed that there were 290 on the rolls— l6o boys and 140 girls, the average attendance bsing 236 5 and the highest 243. Inspect)? Hcndry visited the school on the 22nd ult., r-ut had not yrt reported. After the transaction of sonifi routine business the committee adjourned . Agricultural,— A great many of. the farmers in this district are well on with the ploughing of their stubble and making preparations for the next teason's -crops. They have had very little difficulty as far as frost is concerned, which I believe is sometimes a serious drawback to wiotsr ploughing. — The second annual winter show under the ausphes of the Riverton Cottage 'Gardeners' and Poultry Fanciers' Association will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday, Julyl, and it is predicted that it will be even a greater success than the one held last year. The asiociation is a newly-formed one, and will include.in the list of its exhibits all sorts of dairy produce, grain, &c, besides poultry, hams, bacon, and vegetables There arc ]2 olasse* for grain and roots, 14 for vegetables, 42 for poultry, I for dairy produce, aud 8 for bams and bacon. '1 here will aLo be 12 special pnze3, one beiDg of the value of £4 10s for the collection of three varieties of - .turnips. ' Competitors will be at liberty to make • asmany entries as they please in all classes, which . is enc uiraging to intending exhibitors. . t - Riverton Sfortjw Rifle Club.— On Thurs- , day weiik a match, Married v.. Single, was fired, resulting in the defeat of the br.iittdictn by 44 points, 'the rifle used by this club is what is ' commonly known as a pea rifle. Mr Hackworih was tovj_Ecorer for the married -side with 22, and ■ for the single Mr Miller with .the possible, 25. To . make the shooting interesting trophies will be competed for, and it should prove a very pleasant source of amusement during the winter months.
