week, 3ft ; total, 503 f t: face still very hard. No. 3- crosscut.— Distance driven for we.'k, 2ft; total, 41ft; face still very hard. No. 2 rise.— Rige put up 2ft during the week ; total, 30ft. No. 4 crosscut.— Distance driven for week, 2ft; total, 24ft; value of ore in this face still improving. No. 3 rise.— Timbering of rise has been curled on during the week. Surface Work.— Benches : The excavation of overburden at Nos. land 2 benches has been carried on during the week/exposing ore of good value. At No. % bench the breaking of ore is being proceeded with. A blacksmith's shop with two forges has been erected at No. 2 bench. Air compressor and reck drills have been running during the week. Good progress is being made with new assay office. , Progress Report.— Hauling line : Top yard platelayed, erection -• of brake nearing completion. Crushing plant : Crushing siiicious and lirasslohe fluxes, finishing off smaller water connections of Nc. 1 blast furnace, No. 2 waiting to be blown in. Laboratory finished. Coke, 85 tons received. Weather dry and frosty. The superintending railway engineer reports for tKe week ending Ist June :— Rails were laid to-day-into the big cutting at 15-Mile. Hope to start remaining four bridges next week. All earthworks- completed except Murray's cutting in Hall's Creek, which will take another iveek. Gaffney. and Etarvey have completed their contract and have received final certificate. " ' Mr A. G. Fenwick informs us that hft received a cable on Fiiday that smelting^opcutions have been commenced.
DREDGING HE TURNS. > The secretary of the Dunedin Gold Dredging Company (Limited) received , the following telegram from the dredgemaster on Saturday:— "Washed up for 230s of gold." , Mr Thomas Catlender reports 660z 18dwt 12gr retorted gold- from the Sew Hoy Big Beach Gold Mining Company (Limited) for past week. The return from the Edin* Dredge for the past 12 days was 520z. ■ . ' . , Last week the Roxburgh Dredging Company washed up, lloz of gold. The directors have decided to add Bft to the present ladder, as it will noif teach the deep ground. Until -this addition is made for about a fortnight there will be no • dredging.-— Tuapaka Times. The Upper Waipori Alluvial Gold DiedgiDg Company (Limited) obtained from No. 1 dredgn lOoz 7dwt of pold for 130 hours' dredging, aud from No. 2 dredge lb'oa ldwt of gold for 133 hours' dredging last wuek. The Jutland Flat (Waipori) Gold Mining Company (Limited) obtained 28oz 14dwt of gold for 144 hours wages' time— l3b' hoars actual dredging —last week. The secretary of the Otaeo Gold Dredging Company (Limited) reports 2ooz sdwt of gold for five days' dredging. -^ Hyde and party obtained lOoz lOdwt for last week's work.
