A NEW PUMP.
During the past few days an improved force pump has been exhibited at .the workshop of Mr J. Bobertson, engineer, Stafford street. The pump has been designed and registered by Mr R. Cockerell, of this town, and from its extreme simplicity of construction and its great capabilities of rai*ing water for mining and other purpo39fl it should soon come into general use. A feature of it is that it i* capable of pumping either dirty or clean water with great rapidity and under comparatively light power, while there is but little wear and tear owing to the simplicity -of the plunger and working barrel, which can be renewed with little delay. It may be set to work in . a few minutes iv shallow -water (a depth of from,- 4in to 6in being ,«umcieni) or as deep as is' required, and will force -water and sand to any given height. The fine wash with the water and gold is drawn into the pump by the vacuum, and is forced on through it up to the boxe*, and the 'coarse material after being 10 strained in continually forked off into the paddock. The pumps can be driven by a new system of reversible horse-works or any other motive power. If the new pump comes up to expectations it should afford employi ment for many in working the flats and river beds, which are now unworkable owing to too much under water and no fall.
