GORE.

June 2.— * — weather continues to be excep- j tionally fine for this season of the year, with occa v iona\ frost at night and bright sunshine during th<s day. The Winter, Show.— The Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Society have carried out their first winter, show in a manner which reflects the highest credit on them. The Town Hall being notoriouslytoo small for such a purpose, the committee decided to add a temporary structure on I the eaat side. After the framework was pat up i the first serious check was experienced when it was ascertained that the Railway depattmenfc would not be able to lend the tarpaulins which had been relied oh to cover the building. By the way, does it not very often happen that this department " cannot sea its way " ? It seems to be composed principally of negatives. In the dairy .exhibits there was v«ry little left to be desired, as very high grade butter and cheese were shown. Only an expert could in many eases decide as to quality. Tv the -hams and bacon there was in some instances an absence of colour, which was, however, quite made up fur by the strong pertume There were excellent exhibits in home-made bread, scones, <tc, while some really tempting fruit was in the close vicinity. The stratagems of the small boys in gradually dislodging and finally capturing an apple or pear proved that the committee should have consulted some of these artists in devising* means to protect the fruit. You have to get up early to be even with the young colonial. The ] honey, beeswax, home-made wines, jams and jellies, and pickles were all of excellent quality. The leading feature of the show was the very oxcellent quality of the grain and roots. These seemed good enough to show anywhere without disgrace. On Saturday afternoon, when the sun was shining brightly and the band was playing some of the good old-fashioned tunes such as "The wind that shakes the barley," "The Irish washerwoman," and " The de'i.l amang the tailors," all that was wanted to set the goodnatured, happy gathering dancing was space. The general arrangements of the committee left nothing to be desired. Of course the usual mild form of gambling was indulged in by buying chunks of cheese containing coins. Some wonderful instances of good luck are recorded. Dog Trials. -The three events were keenly contested, the trials being held in Mr Coutfs paddock, near the saleyardi. Mr G. P. Johnston's Black (450 yd« start) was first in class I, Mr M Kinuou'v Riy (680y<)s start) whs fir?t in class 11, iHio Mr R Fort-un^'i S vwp (i> Oy ! <.t:M-c) w-is firet in class HI.
