DUNBACK.

A_pril 13.— The weather here during the Easter holidays was very bad— thick fog and rain nearly every day. Easter holidays a3 a rule pass off very quietly up this way. The bad weather interfered a good deal with trapping operations. There are

now 30 hands employed in the cannlne works. The number of rabbits reoeived exceeds 30Q0 some days. The canned rabbits are carted to Port Chalmers by Thomas Stanley's waggon. This does not say much for our railways. A petition to the county council is going the rounds of the ratepayers in Dunback riding ior signature asking the council to place the footbridge over the Shag River at' the road which crosses from the townshin! instead of on the site agreed on at the last meeting, which is nearly a mile lower down. According to rumour, we shall hear more of the bridge question. Amusements. —The long-talked-of social and dance in aid of the public library came off on Friday evening last. Rain fell nearly all day, and at one time the committee thought of putting it off, but the afternoon getting a little better, it was decided to cany it through. Despite the weather there was a fair attendance, some coming a good distance over muddy roads. The affair proved very enjoyable, but financially poor. Dancing was kept up until nearly 4 o'clock. At intervals during the evening songs were contributed by Mrs Mills, Misa D. Ross, and Messrs Scott and Pring. Mr P. Flynn contributed a step dance. The refreshments were plentiful and of go:d quality. Music "was supplied by Miss O'N>-ill (piano) and Mr J. Philip (violin), assisted by Me^rs D. Philip (violin) and Ingle (piano). Mr John Murray acted as M.C.
