FORTROSE.

November. 20.— Tho annual meeting of the Caledonian Society was held on Saturday evening last, Mr 11 A .Elliott (vice-president) in the chair. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £10, vrhich was considered very satisfactory. For the ensuing year the following officers were appointed : — Mr K. G. M'Kenzie, president ; Messis Elliott and Anderson, vice-presidents; Mr Millurd, secretary and treasurer. A strong committea was also elected. The sports are, as usual, on New Year's Day. Agricultural. — The season is a most backward one owing to the amount of cold, wet weather experienced. There is not a sufficient amount of heat to push the crops on with any speed. Here we are within a month of Christmas and we have had no hummer weather yet. Shearing has again commenced, aud is general throughout the district. So far only one shed has introduced shearing machines, and that is the Woodslea Downs shed. The lambing season was a good one. Taking the district all over— large places and small — the percentage is not far Bhort of 100.

Mining. — Gold digging is again going on on the beaches. All the dredges have disappeared, but th«re are a few parties of men at work, evidently with satisfactory results, as they keep working away cheerfully. Road Works.— Work on the various roads is progressing steadily. There has been a change in the management of the po-operative works, Mr Duncan, the engineer, giving place to a gentleman from the North Island. These works should be nearing completion. Mr Duncan, the late engineer, was very popular with the men, and is to be the recipient of a testimonial from them.
