From same date ib has also been decided to give telephone exchange subscribers, upon payment of an annual fse of sgs or the payment of 6d for each message so dealt with, the convenience of having telegrams addressed to them transmitted by telephone to their places of business or residences immediately upon recept, and of telephoning from their places of business or residences telegrams intended for transmission from tho .telegraph office with which their telephones are connected. At a special meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce the following resolution was passed: — "That in the egtafflaa i ai < wwrnii c fanFagMn3aiggii7i(nriiiLiiri n muhh ViVmia manm

opinion of the committee of this chamber the Order-in-Council iesued by the l\Btmastergeneral with reference to delayed telegrams is a retrograde step ; it places country dihtricts and that portion of the population which would not pay the cost of ordinary telegrams under special disadvantages ; ib is not required foe revenue purposes, as the annual report of the Postmaster-general for the year 189+ shows that the whole of the operations of tho department for that period resulted in a credit bfcUnco of £2849 lie 9d. The committee is further of opiuion that the proposed alteration will have the effect of decreasing the number of delayed telegrams without a corresponding increase in ordinary message?, and that the present revenue of the department will be diminished if the existing regulations are altered."

There aro three candidates for the Gore mayoralty — namely, Dr Copland and Messrs Sini9on and D. L. Popplewell. At the end of last week the number of inmates in the Dunedin Hospital was 94-.
