OTAGO SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION.

The results of the annual examination in connection with the Otago Sunday School Union were declared in First Church on Friday night, when the presentation of prizes to the successful scholars was also made. MrW. Todd presided, Mr H. Webb read the report of the examiners (MisEes Flora M. Allan and M. W. Alves, Messrs H. H. Driver, D. R. Eunson, and Herbert Webb), which was as follows :—: — The committee of examiners return herewith 604 papers of competitors, and announce the examination as follows :—

There are altogether 73 prize-takera, 132 deserving of firat class certificates, 109 of second class certificates, and 126 of third class certificates. These figures compare very well with last year's returns, when it is considered that the subject of that year's examination was one iv which the Echolars had been so often examined before. The percentage of failures, though greater than it was last year, ft much les3 than it was in the previous year, and very many of the papers sent in were of considerable merit — 94 per cent, of marks having been gained by competitors in three

out of the four ordinary grades. This ie a result which the committee think has not been equalled before, although higher marks have in the past been awarded.to some of the papers. A new feature in this year's examination was the special class which the union created for scholars who have already tnken prizes in the first grade and for any others who might cluo^e to compete with them Of cour.-e something more was expected of those who entered for this class than of the competitora iv the ordinary grades, and it is disappointing to find that on this account "only the scholars came up for examination.
