Milking Cows. TO THE EDITOR.

Sib, — Now that dtirying is looked on as one of cur rco'fc important industries 1 need not apologiae for trying to elicit an opinion on & very material part of the treatment of cows— viz ,as to how often a good cow in full flow of milk and a plentiful flush of grass ought to be milked in 24 horns. I was b^ed ia a district where from calving time uutil tbe best parb of the grass season was over cows were milked regularly three times a day— say,. 5 a.m.! noon, and half-past 7 to 8 p.ra — and often then, especially in the evening, cows used to manifest uneasiness from the pressure of tho miik. In New Zealand twice a day seems tho regular rule, winter and summer. ] Rich grass or poor grase, I am cettaiu I have ; seen cows die here from milk fever which might : easily have bsen saved bj proper attention' iv the way of milking. I have often eeen cows with inflamed or swollen udders at the time of calving milked every three hoars, tha vessel and t»ats being bathed in w&rm water for seme time before each milking until the hardness vras partially got rid of.

Much more might be written on tbii mntfcer, but although I was bom and reared on a farm, it is over 45 years Bince I have had aught to do with tbc managoruent of cows ; co I will leave the subject at present for the discussion of Q6Q with larger experience *f ike Bubjecfe,

I I may say, although I have ou!y r<fcnel to 1c63 caused by milk fever, I am undsr tin; impre^Mon that by milkictg thr. j o times dnilj more could be got from good cows on good feed, »ud with h finitely greater comfort to tbo cow, thau can bo got by the twice-»-day method.— l am, &o , A.
