Mr Skene reports under date August 13 :— It is useless to expect any improvement in the face of the continued prohibitory weather for any sort of out-door work, but it is no good to complain — teed time and" harvest will come round in due course. About town things are far from bright, and it is le3t not to disclose the state of affairs, which it is to be hoped is only temporary. Lite wages - Couple*, £65 ; shepherds, iM • ploughmen, 15s and 17s 6d ; grooms, 12s and 15* ; cooks, 15s ; gardeners, 6s per day and 20s per week ; boys and lads for farms and dairies, 6s, Bs, 10s, and 12s ; housekeepers, 12s ; van lads, 10s. "
