ROXBURGH.

OCTOBER 29.— Our people are fully alive to the benefits derivable from innocent amusements, and are always willing to help any local efforts. Last Thursday the Roxburgh Brass Band held a picnic, and had a social dance in our Athenceum in the evening, both being well patronised. An abundanuo or the best of; eatables was provided by the Roxburgh, ladies both at tha picnic and dance. We think we have the beat brass band up country, and that they are deserving of every encouragement Agricultural and Pastoral.— Our sheep* owners have had a good lambing so far. The grass is good, but we want some ram to keep it growing; There ia a considerable quantity of land sown in oats, and a good many are getting the land ready for turnips. Wheat ie too cheap. We were all very sorry to hear of Mr Peter Ul'Gill'a. death. He was hfc'ily respected here. The fruit <;rop is not so good >\a we could wish, but there is a good quantity in the district. All fear of frosts is now over for this season. From October '20 to 21 is tie critical time for our fruitgrowers. Our. M.H.R.— Our worthy member, the Hon. Mr Larnach, ha 3 worked well for our district and the country in the post session of Parliament. Everyone sneaks well of him here. He> has oh. tainedj£4oQo for a. much wanted bridge at Miller's Slat, a promise from the Government to got the Heriot railway extension to here surveyed, has exerted himself to get the Waipori difficulty settled, subsidies granted to our county councils for main road maintenance where there are no railways, and a good many other tilings. I think when he visits our district he will receive a cordial welcome.

Health.— Nearly everyone has had the influenza, but the fine warm weather we are onjoyiug baa improved the health of our people.
