Musical Critics. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — In the Otago Witness of June 28 there appears under the head of "Rural Rambles" a criticism by " C. N B." (of course we all know his name) of a concert given by our Naseby ladies and gentlemen in aid of the funds of our local atheiifcum, in which this individual gives his opinion of country talent. In our mining townships all give a helping hand towards a , worthy object, and though not in a large city, still talent, and good talent, too, can be found outside of the so-called musical sphere. 3he article in question is only an attempted slur on our people, and shows the ignorance of classical music on the pai-t of this wouldbe critic. As a visitor, ho w.-s welcomed, and the programme altered to give him an item on the same, his contribution being a comic recitation given in Germaii-Engli h, amusing to the Chinese in tho back seats. But as to a fair critique of the singing on the occasion, iti.-> only right to say that after the local paper ref .sing to publish his offensive remark- > c lias thought fit to slang ladies and go tlemen in a distant paper for the eourtc*y which we a" ways ex" end to strangers. In conclusion, I mi^ht remark that ■wh^n Duneiliii miiMcnl firms f-O!xl rout <! their piaiio-tunfi". for j.joldfit'ltl" custom it would he as well for thun to sec- thr.b tb^y do not h^k 1
