SOUTHLAND NEWS NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Invercargill, July 4. The Ruahine steamed into the Bluff Harbour and made fast to the wharf this afternoon without the slightest hitch of any kind. She was drawing to-day, roughly, 23ft on an even keel, and has on board 56,000 carcases of mutton with her other space pretty well full of general cargo. She wiil complete her loading here, taking in another 1600 carcases of matton, aud as much general cargo as she has space for. She returos to Lyttelton for coal and passengers. Captain Bone says he would sooner take his ship into the Bluff than Lyttelton. About ZOO passengers joined the Dunedin express here and at Qore and intermediate stations to - day, taking advantage of the cheap fares offered by the Railway department to inspect the Gothic at Ports Chalmers and hear Dr Talmage's lectures at Dunedin. The weather is unpropitiouß for travelling, or probably more would have availed themselves of the cheap trip. The Southland Rope and Twine Company's works were seriously damaged by fire between 1 and 2 this morning. The insurances amount to £4190 in various offices. But for the excellent supply of water, Guthrie's extensive woodware factory must have been destroyed.
