THE RUAHINE'S VISIT TO THE BLUFF.
At a special meeting of the InvercargilL Chamber of Commerce the following telegram was read from Captain Gibb3, of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Christchurch :— " Underwriters' Association here threaten to charge shippers i per cent, extra if Ruahine goes to the Bluff. We have no intention of altering our plans. Captain Bone and we are quite satisfied with your harbourmaster's report that the steamer can safely enter the berth and leave Bluff harbour.— Isaac Gibbs, Christchurch." After some conversational discussion it was decided, on the motion of Mr Nichol, seconded by Mr Turnbull, to send the following telegram to the chairman of the underwriters in Christchurch and a copy to the Dunedin chairman :—": — " That this chamber protests against the proposed extra • rate being charged by the associated insurance companies on shipments per Ruahine visiting the Bluff. Consider this action entirely uncalled for. Harbourmaster and all authorities consider the Bluff a perfectly safe port for any sized vessel, so long as draught of water is within the berthage, say 24ft." The telegrams were promptly despatched, and very shortly afterwards the chairman of the Dunedin association replied as follows :—": — " No extra premium is contemplated by this association."
