ARRIVAL OF THE GOTHIC.
The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's magnilicent steamer Gothic arrived off the heads early on Sunday morning and anchored until 12 30 p.m., when, the tide being favourable, she steamed inside the heads under the charge of Pilot M' Donald. On coming up the harbour she was met by the customs boat, and the answers to the usual questions re'ative to the health of all on board being satisfactory, she was admitted to pratique by Dr Cunninghame (health officer), and at once cleared in by Captain Gray (customs surveyor). Continuing her course, she was berthed alongside the George street pier at 1 45 p.m , in readiness to commence this morning to discharge her cargo. For this port she has some 1000 tons, in addition to 170 tons for transhipment, the balance of her cargo (1300 tons) being for Lyttelton and Wellington. She also brought 8 bags, 1 packet mails, and 29 boxes of parcel post, and 106 passengers for New Zealand ports, having landed £2 at Capetown and 40 at Hobart. The health of all on board has been excellent, and the usual amusements took place, to the enjoyment of all on board. Her passage from Plymouth to Taiaroa Heads, including stoppages, was 42 days 3 hours and 40 minutes, which could have been considerably lessened if she had not come out under moderate rate of speed so as to keep as near as possible to her time table dates. On her last homeward passage, notwithstanding the economising of coal until she reached Rio, the passage was accomplished, including all stoppages, in 36 days 22 hours 55 minutes, the actual steaming time being 35 days 13 hours 13 minutes.
