Fat Sheep.— 34l6 penned to-d»y, of which 180 were merinos. The quality was hardly equal to last week, but still there was a lot of very useful mutton forward. The excessive supply to-day following last week's full market caused the dullest and most lifeless sale seen at Burnside for many a long day. Fortunately, however, buyers for export and graziers bought about 1500, and thus Eaved a number from being turned out till next week. Prices suffered on the average 2a 6d per head from last week, and we must look for a dull market next week, as butchers have now a good supply on hand. Wool.— By the mail just to hand via San Francisco we are in receipt of priced catalogues of the thhd series of colonial wool sales in London up to and including the 18th May, unfortunately confirming advices received by cable at the time. We are also in receipt of our London circular reporting that there was a good attendance of buyers on the opening day, but competition — more particularly for faulty descriptions — was not brisk, values for medium and inferior merino marking a depreciation of about 5 per cent., as compared with the closing rates of the preceding series. The better descriptions of merino and crossbred were without material change, though coarse dingy qualities of the latter ruled in buyera' favours, but as the sales progressed coarße crossbred to some extent recovered the initial decline. Superior and good greasy merino also met a brisk demand at prices well up to the closing rates of the preceding series, though .medium, inferior, and faulty parcels of the latter marked a depreciation of id to fully id per lb. The Home trade up to date were the principal operators. There was a moderate inquiry from Germany ; but from France the demand was restricted, and only a very few parcels were bought for America. As indicative of the poaition of the industry, it is noticeable that the operations on the part of top makers and dealers generally have been extremely reserved, the bulk of the wool sold being purchased by the manufacturers and spinners. In the local market there is no business of any importance I paßsing. Sheepskins.— A very satisfactory demand continues to be experienced for these, and although I the supply is pretty considerable therer is no lack of buyera in the market. Mostly all sorta have good attention, more especially crossbreds, both dry and green. Merinos have a far demand also, though not so keenly competed for. Prices, however, for any sort do not seem to improve ; indeed, on this occasion they were lower by 3d to 6d per Bkin, buyers being doubtful as to the outcome of their operations, country dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, fetching Is 6d to 2s 6d ; do do merino, Is 3d to Is 6d ; medium to good crossbreds, 2s 7d to 3s 9d ; extra heavy, 4s to 4s 6d ; merinosgood to best, 2s to 2a 9d ; extra heavy, 3s Id to 3s b'd ; dry pelts, 2d to Is ; best green crqssbreds, 3s 6d to 3s lOd ; extra heavy (at the freezing works), 4a to 4s 6d ; medium to good, 3a to 3s 6d ; green merinoa, Is 4d to 2s 6d Rabbitakina. — These are coming to hand a little more freely ; the supply, however, is still limited. On Monday moderate catalogues were submitted, when all the regular buyers in the trade were in attendance, and competed with a considerable amount of briskness, beat skins gradually improving in value. Quotations : For best winter, lOJd to 12id; late autumn, 9d to lOd ; early do, 7d to Sid ; summer, 4Jd to 6jd ; suckers, half-grown and inferior (mixed), ljd to 4 jd per lb.

Hides. — There is no alteration in either demand or values, all coming to hand being readily placed at late rates, say — for heavy, 2d to 2Jd ; extra do, 2]d to 3d ; medium, IJd to ljd ; light and inferior, Id to ljd per lb. Tallow. — Market slightly less firm. All available, however, meets with buyers at the following quotations— say, for best rendered mutton, 18s 6d to 20s ; medium to good, 16s to 18a ; inferior to medium,. I'M to 15s 6d ; beat mutton caul fat, 13s to 13s 6d ; medium to good, 12s to 12s 9d ; inferior to medium, 10a to 11s 9d per cwt (ex store).

. Grain.— Wheat : The position of the market in respect to values differs but little from that of the previous week. Stockß on hand are gradually decreasing, and millers being cognisant of the fact that the supply of southern-grown wheat will be very much short of requirements are buying more freely, and, although prices cannot be Baid to have undergone any material alteration, there has been some little increase in the business done. Prime milling velvet iB scarce, and prices for that description may be quoted as

slightly firmer. Inferior and medium milling Is ] also in fair request. Good whole fowls' wheat is scarce and firmer; but owing to the large quantity of this class of wheat held in Canterbury it will be somewhat difficult to secure any advance on present rates locally. Quotations : For prime milling velvet, 2s lOd to 2s lidchoice a shade more ; medium to good do and Tuscan, 2s 8d to 2s 9d ; medium to good red wheat, 2s 5d to 2s M ; medium to good whole fowls' wheat, 2s Id to 2s 4d ; inferior and broken. Is 9d to 2s (ex store, sacks weighed in, terms). Oats : There ia a very noticeable decrease in the quantity now coming forward from the country. The demand, however, is somewhat easier; and, although small lines of a retail character for local requirements can be disposed of at last week's quotations, no sales of any importance can be effected except at a reduction on late rates. Millers have fair stocks on hand, and, while purchasing as opportunity offers, they are not in the markot to any extent. Quotations : For prime feed and milling, Is 6d to Is s£d— extra choice a shade more ; medium to good feed, Is 4Jd to Is sd ; inferior to medium, Is 2d to Is 3Jd ; bright long Tatarians, full and clean, fit for seed, Is 6Jd to Is 9d (ex store, sacks extra, net). Barley : The quantity of this cereal changing hands is limited, there being no demand of any consequence for any descriptions. Quotations : For prime malting, 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; medium to good, 3s to 3s 3d ; milling, 2s 3d to 2s 9d ; feed (no demand), Is 6d to Is 9d (ex store, sacks extra). Grass Seeds.— The market for these has been somewhat quieter lately, there being no demand of any importance. Quotations : For best machine-dressed ryegrass seed, 2s 9d to 3s 3d; choice perennial, 3a 6d to 4s (ex store, net). Cocksfoot : Best dressed, 5Jd to 6Jd ; medium, 4d to 5d per lb. Potatoes.— The market for these remains very flat, the supply being Btill excessive. Sales are difficult to effect except in retail lots. Quotations : For best Derwents, £2 to £2 ss ; medium, £1 15s to £2 ; prime kidneys (for seed), £2 17s 6d to jC3 10s per ton (ex store, sacks weigned in, net). Chaff.— The market has been fully supplied during the past week, and prices now aro.if anything, easier. Quotations : For best, £2 7s 6d to £2 123 6d— choice a shade more ; medium to good, 37s 6d to 45s ; inferior to medium, 30s to 35s per ton (ex truck, sacks extra, net). Dairy Produce.— The demand is confined to local trade requirements, only a retail business passing— prime salt butter, dairy-made, fetching 7d to 8d : medium, 4d to 6d ; factory-made, 9d to lOd per lb. Factory-made cheese : Medium size, 4Jd to 4Jd ; loaf do, 4Jd to 5d ; dairy-mado, 2d to 4d per lb. Flax.— The market is void of any animation, no demand of any consequence existing. Quotations, nominal — Bay for medium to good, £13 10s to £14 10a ; inferior to medium, £10 to £12 per ton (ex store).
