WAIKOIKOI.
June 25 —Our weather is extremely cold, and we are now having sharrj froats ; while a few days ago wo had a series of bitterly cold winds. For a considerable time our Sundays have been wet, and so, cold that it has been quite a punishment to sit out a church service. Could not the church committee invent .some inexpensive and effective method of heating the church building during the winter mouths ? I would suggest that they get the minister to take a month's holiday at winter time. By doing so they would be the saving of many a perishing attendant at the services. Scholastic. — Speaking of the parson getting a holiday reminds me of what a sensible committee have charge of the affairs of our local school. This very important body have some feeling for shivering humanity, and have granted a fortnight's holiday to the children. Won't both teachers and pupils keep this committee in mind, and evermore sing their praises 1 ' Hymeneal.— To keep the cold out get more blankets or get married, or perhaps better still, get bath. Several of our young people have followed this advice, and several more are just on the eve of doing so. On Thursday of this week Mr A. M'Kay, of this place, and Miss Annie M'Kay, of Bushside, are to be united in the bonds of holy wedlock. Long life and prosperity to them. Arbob, Day —August 1, the day appointed by Government for the celebration of Arbor Day, -is to be duly observed here. No doubt the women folk will turn out and help the. members of the stronger Bex to plant trees. Under the supervision of the ladies things are always well done, and if they turn out on this occasion the trees are Bure to grow. Draughts. — Th,e local club meet religiously eveiy Monday night in the schoolhouse, aud indulge in earnest play for about two hours. A match against Tapanui is being arranged. Dr bTUART's Memorial Fund.— Subscriptions for this fund are coming in but slowly in this district. The 'Koi Valley Lodge, 1.0. G.T., voted £1 10s towards it, and the local school children are making a collection.
