CARNIVAL AT MOSGIEL.

A carnival in aid of the building fund of St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church, Mosgiel, was opened in the Volunteer Hall at that place on Thursday night. The hall had been nicely decorated for the ocoaaion, and there was a very large attendance, the building being excessively crowded. There are in connection with the affair four fanoy goods stalls, a refreshment stall, and a shooting gallery. At the fanoy goods stalls are displayed a variety of articles, auch as are usually to be seen at affairs of the kind, including some nice hand-painted mirrors and beautifully-worked cushions. The carnival was formally opened in a brief Epeeoh by the Rev. Father O'Neill. A number of children attending St. Mary's School (who had been instructed by Madame Hamaan) subsequently contributed a dance very-gracefully, under the direction of Miss M'Lachlan. The business of buying and selling then commenced in earnest, and the various stallholder*) appeared to do remarkably well ; while the promoters of raffles wera greatly in evidence. The following are the names of the stallholders :— No. 1 stall — Mesdames Cahill and C. B. Morris, Misses J. O'Brien, B. O'Brien, Mehalski, and Norman ; No. 2 stall— Mrs Wilkie, Misses Hislop, A. Knott, T. O'Neill, K.'Flynn, and N. Flynn ; No. 3 6fcall — Mesdames Cornish and Taylor, Mieses M'Lachlan and Knofct ; No. 4 stall — Mrs O'Grady, Misses Murdoch, Day, O'Neill, and O'Reilly ; refreshment stall — Mrs O'Kane, Misses Smith, Duncan, and Mills. Shooting gallery— Messrs J. Elder and E. Knott. It should be mentioned that Mr Cox's Venetian Band was in attendance at the carnival and played at intervals a number of selections, which were much appreciated. The names of the players are as follow,: — Miss Begg (gaifcar), Miss E. . Cameron (guitar), Measrs L. Cox (bandurria), Brundell (guitar), G. Cameron (mandola), Ridley, Coggon, and H. Cameron (mandolines).
