Brodie's Tour.

A Southland correspondent writes :— " There wa3 a good muster of players at Calcium Hall on Monday night, the 18th, to witness the play of Mrßrodi"}, who is on a tour round the Western district. In all he played 30 games, playing 8 to 10 players at a time. Out of this number he managed to place 25 wins to his credit, the other five being drawn. Mr John Hannah, of Otautau. scored 3 draws, and Messrs Israel Turnbull and David Lyons were responsible for ihe other two. On the 19th he played 15 games in the Athenceum, Riverton, playing four at a time. Mr James M 'Donald tried conclusions with him five times, losing 4 games with 1 drawn. Mr J. M'lnnes played 5, lost 4, and druw 1 ; Mr John Hannah (who proved tho toughest oppo&ent) played 5, out of that number losing 3, 2 being drawn. Next day he played 12 games, winning 0, losing 1, and 2 drawn. M

Ward secured 1 draw and I wiu out of 8 games. Mr Hancock secured 1 draw out of 4. Brodie also gave an exhibition of his skill on Wednesday (30th) at Ofcautau, playing 10 opponents at a time. He played 30 games, and only 1 win was scored, being secured by Mr J. Hannah, who also secured 2 draws. JUraws were also secured by M r A r ffl Henderson (1), Lindsay (2), Afiieck (1), and Fraser (1)." We are not sure but what 13rodie8 Dunedin friends have some cause for anxiety on his account at present, a3 he seems in danger of losing something more valuable than a game of draughts. We don't wish to create a scare ; but read the following from an Otautau correspondent :—" The Dunedin champion was the guest of Mr J. Hannah for a week at the Aparima estate, Otautau. Here he had a tussle with Miss Jessie Hannah (18 yeara of age), who fairly surprised him by scoring a win and a draw. Several other young ladies tried their skill, but they all failed to make a stand against him. Mr Brodie's opinion is that MiBB Hannah, with more experience of the game, should become one of the good players of the colony. Ihe ladies round about Aparima estate entertained the champion at a social. Miss Jessie Hannah was in the chair, and on behalf of the young ladies of the district gave the champion a hearty welcome, and hoped that he would be successful in the match for the- New Zealand championship. The visitor replied in suitable terms, and in course of his remarks hinted that if ho won tha championship he might no longer remain , a young bachelor. He thanked them heartily for the welcome they had given him, and would long remember them all." In Waitahuna scores it should have been mentioned that a draw was secured by Master Yorke ; and on Brodie's last night at Invercargill Messrs Cooper and Walsh secured wins, and Mr Gibson a draw. At Fairfax there was a good muster of players to meet tho visitor, who gave exhibitions of hia frkill. Brodie pluyed 15 games, winning them all. At the Ocean Beach he played 16 games, of which he won 12 and lost 1, to Mr M'Kag, while Messrs Gibson, Thomson, and Hannigan secured. 1 draAV each. At the Bluff there was a good turn-out of players. Brodie pUyed 15 games and won 12; Mr D. M'Dougall secured a draw and Mr Etnmerson a win, while Mrs Metzger, of Bay View Hotel, won a ''Denny" off the visitor. The lady played up well. Other ladles tried their skill, but failed to score cither a draw or win.
