Otago Chess Club Sides Match.
Game between Messrs R. A. Cleland and J Mouat. , Frbncii Defence.
(«) This bishop is.considered specially valuable in the French Game, and the expediency of exchanging it for the Xt is doubtful. (b) Perhaps px p is better, but it looks unsafe, as Black's k would be much exposed. (c) Q-Q 3is better. Black supposed that White intended next move to pUy P-Q Xt 4 and proceed with a queen's side attack (rf) Premature. The queen's pieces should first have been brought into action. (c) This appears ti be best, otherwise Black would get his p doubled and isolated, and otherwise have a bad game.
(f) Intending presently to bring the q over to k's side. ((/) b-b 4 is better. (/i) This p was the weak point in Black's game. It shut in the qb. Black therefore decided to sacrifice rather than defend it, hoping to obtain an equivalent presently. (t) Because Black, if he moved, the supporting q away, might lose his two bishop 3 for a Rook by R x B ; and, moreover, the b at b 4 is in a good place. (?) This is now too late. Black's attack is too strong to be parried without loss. (fc) This bishop has served his purpose at b 4 and now joins the attack. (0 There seems to be nothing better to be done. (m) Not up to Mr Cleland'B usual standard.
