Solution of Problem 1082. Key move— l B-Q B 2.

To the Chess Editor Otago Witness.

Sir.— -When playing over games having an extended analysis appended, such as those admirable ones on the Tdrrasch- IViigorin games published in the Witness a few weeks back, I have sometimes found it a little irksome to follow them. I would make the following suggestion as tending to relieve this and at the Bame time introducing many other advantages. The orthodox method of indicating the pieces is to use the first letter of the name of the piece as a symbol. To distinguish Ihe colour we are forced to prefix the word white or black. This could be done at once by adopting capitals for the white pieces and small letters for the black onec White's Xt would be "Xt," and Black's Xt simply "kt." Extending this idea a little further, R x Xt would be known to mean " White plays RxKt"; and r x kt would mean "Black plays R x Kt." An attempt has been made to effect this by prefixing a number of dots bsfore the move, thus : ...It x Xt means "Black plays R x Kt." The method of using Frnall letters for Black's piecc3 and moves is, I think, at once neater, simpler, and more compact than the old system, and a relief to the monotony of along series of moves in the notes, to a game.— l am, <Sc, June 19, ISM. J. W. Mellor.

[Mr Mellor's suggestion isa good one. and should meet with general approval. It will for the future be adopted in annotating games in the Witness. The second player's moves will be printed in small letters to distinguish them from those of the first player. — Ed.] "
