BIRCHWOOD HOUNDS.
The above hounds had a splendid run on the 22nd inst., starting in Mr Kirkpatrick's paddock,'.through Messrs M'Anelly's, Ronald's, and Ford's paddocks, and finishing at Mr M'Anelly's homestead. The doga were in splendid form, and gave quite enough to do for even the best horses. In fact only the huntsman (Mr M. M'Kay) was in at the death. We were all very glad to Bee that genuine and thorough sportsman, Captain Gardner, although not in the saddle, enjoying the hunt as of yore. He was driving a pair of bsaulifal grey ponies, and I trust that he will often grace these meetings with his presence, for to him belongs the honour of starting this fine sport in Southland. Amongst others present I noticed Mr M. M'Kay (huntsman) on Golden Moth ; The whip (A. Myers) on Moonray ; the actingmaster (Mr Miller) on Sledgehammer ; Mr Jones on Killarney ; Mr C Henderson on a fiery brown ; Mr Cameron on Juno ; Mr P. M'Anelly on Fairy Queen ; Mr M. Egin oa The Admiral ; Mr Pye on the Wild Irishman ; Mr Jones, on KeroFeue ; Mr Molloy, on Greygown ; Mr Forde. on Leola ; Mr T. Finn, ou Dick ; Mr M. Egan, jun., on Glenn ; Mr J. E^an. on Jack ; Mr Stephens, on a black ; Me Ritchie, on a nice bay ; Mr Bates, on a brown mare ; Mr Gallacher, on a chestnut filly ; Mr Spillane, on a bay ; Mr Bradley, on a black ; and several others whom the writer did not know.
After the death, Host Bates invited all and sundry to partake of very substantial refreshments. Even the ladies could get their tiny sandwich and lemonade, while the sterner sex could have a sample of the best brands.
After three hearty cheers and one sheer more a most eDJoyable meetiqg broke up, while regret was expressed on all sides that the hunts in Wairio were so few and far between. An Onlooker.
