Ecclesiastical. — A congregational meeting of the Presbyterian Church is called for on Monday, 25th inst., for the purpose of ascertaining if the congregation are yet prepared to call a minister or to decide what other steps shall be taken, Mr Begg is the only fresh candidate heard bo far, and it now seems as if he will receive a unanimous call to the vacancy.

M.U.1.0.0.F.— 0n Monday evening tho local lodge of Oddfellows made a now departure in holding the first of a series of socials in the Central Hall. The doors were thrown open to the public generally, and a warm welcome was given to all comers. There was a fair attendance. Mr Quin occupied the chair, and in his opening remarks explained that the sole object of this departure was to benefit the young in music, essay writing, and hearing or taking part in debate. The lodge had no personal motive in view, but as the want of such gatherings was greatly felt, they determined, being the senior society in the district, to take the initiative. The Oddfellows defrayed all expenses in connection with the gatherings, and it was to be hoped that the public would bestow their patronage in the phape of a good attendance. To make such gatherings a success it required cooperation, and he firmly believed they would be well supported. The programme consisted of selections by the string band, songs by Messrs Sim, Robinson, Whelan, and Burrell, the latter being accompanied by A. E. Burrell (piano), A. de Lautour (violin), and Miss Burrell (violin). Mr Eskdale gave a humorous reading very acceptably, and Mr Hay read an interesting paper on "Printing," receiving a unanimous vote of thanks at the conclusion. An instrumental duet by Meßsrs Burrell (piano) and A. de Lautour (violin) followed. The string band brought the evening's entertainment to a close by playing a selection. The Chairman intimated that the next meeting would take place in four weeks' time.
